AgentKennel vs Claude Code Remote Control
Both let you reach a Claude Code session from another device. They answer different questions: Remote Control continues a session on your own computer; AgentKennel keeps a dozen agents living on a server.
What each one is
Remote Control is Anthropic's official feature. In the words of its documentation, it connects claude.ai/code or the Claude app for iOS and Android to a Claude Code session running on your machine, and Claude keeps running locally the entire time. Your files, MCP servers, tools and project configuration stay available. A server mode serves several sessions from one machine.
AgentKennel is an open-source (AGPL-3.0), self-hosted dashboard. It runs many real claude terminals in tmux on your VPS and shows them in a browser tab and in Telegram. It is not made by Anthropic; it runs the official Claude Code CLI with your own subscription or API key.
Side by side
| Aspect | AgentKennel | Remote Control |
|---|---|---|
| What you drive | the real claude TUI, in a browser tab | your session, in claude.ai/code or the Claude app |
| Where Claude runs | your VPS | your own machine, which must stay on |
| From the phone | any browser, and Telegram (voice, buttons) | the official Claude app |
| Many agents at once | yes, with a memory limit, idle unloading, archive | yes, in server mode |
| Back after a reboot | yes, the same conversations | restart claude |
| Shared task board | yes | no |
| Other agents (Codex, Cursor…) | no, Claude only | no, Claude only |
| Price | free (AGPL) | included in Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise plans |
Where Remote Control is the better choice
- You work on one machine and want to step away. Start a session at your desk, continue it from the couch. Nothing to install or host.
- Your setup lives on that machine. Local files, tools and MCP servers are right there, because the session never leaves your computer.
- You want the official app. It uses claude.ai/code and the Claude apps, maintained by Anthropic.
Things to know from Anthropic's docs: your computer has to stay on and the claude process has to keep running; outside server mode, each Claude Code instance supports one remote session at a time; it needs a Claude plan, as API keys are not supported; and on Team and Enterprise an Owner must enable it first. If you run claude on a remote machine, the docs suggest starting it inside tmux or screen.
Where AgentKennel is the better choice
- Agents that live on a server, around the clock. Your laptop can sleep; the VPS doesn't.
- Many agents, managed. Named terminals, at most 12 loaded, idle ones unloaded after 2 hours and back on click, an archive, and a Server tab that shows which agent uses the CPU and memory.
- Back after a reboot. Every terminal reopens the same conversation.
- A shared task board where each agent logs its task before editing.
- Telegram with voice notes and Claude's questions as buttons, besides any browser.
- API keys work, as well as a Claude subscription.
The price is that you run a server: you rent a VPS, install AgentKennel (one command), and the agents run there with permission prompts off. That belongs on a dedicated VPS, or in AgentKennel's Docker sandbox.
And Claude Code on the web?
If you'd rather have no machine at all, Anthropic also runs cloud sessions. Per the Claude Code on the web docs, each session runs in an isolated, Anthropic-managed virtual machine, and you can start one from claude.ai/code or the Code tab in the Claude app. It is available on Pro, Max, Ultra and Team plans, and for Enterprise users with the right seats. No server to keep, at the cost of not having a machine of your own that agents can set up as they like.
The short answer
Want one session from your own laptop? Use Remote Control. AgentKennel is for a dozen agents that live on a server around the clock. The full table, with CloudCLI and plain tmux too, is in the AgentKennel README.
